Trusted Turtle's ultimate goals are to provide the knowledge and experiences necessary to understand, respect, and love our aquatic backyard and all of its inhabitants. Students enrolled in Trusted Turtle programs have the chance to learn different skills and participate in life-changing experiences. Whether sailing through mangrove forests, snorkeling amongst vibrant coral reefs, learning how to SCUBA dive, picking up the art of nature photography, and more. The opportunities for our students are endless.
Students graduate from the Trusted Turtle programs with a strong sense of responsibility for conserving Abaco's precious environment and an understanding that we all have a role to play in protecting the aquatic world we love!
Mangrove Magic, Part One of the "Trusted Turtles" program, is an incredible five-day learning journey about the magnificent mangrove forests of Abaco. This course combines classroom learning with field adventures, where students learn the importance of mangroves for fisheries, coastal protection, carbon absorption, and the threats these vital ecosystems face.
The Mangrove Magic students -
1. Identify all 4 types of mangroves and marine/avian/reptilian wildlife that utilize them.
2. Tour the mangroves on a classic Hobie catamaran and learn to sail under instructor supervision.
3. Interact with Green Turtles, learn about ecotourism, and snorkel through the mangroves utilizing their "Species ID" knowledge, guided by a professional dive instructor.
4. Give back and support mangroves' health with debris clean-up.
Mangrove Magic graduation includes a student presentation, Mangrove Magic Certification, student achievement awards, and a pizza party!
Requirements for participation: Successful swim evaluation, positive attitude, and eagerness to learn about mangrove ecosystems and how to protect them.
