On Thursday, March 14, 2024, Grade 5/6 students involved in the Community Connections after school programme interviewed the new Soccer Saturdays coach and successful business woman, Dianna Lowe. The following article was compiled from the notes taken by the students as they interviewed Ms. Lowe.

Ms. Dianna Lowe was born in West Palm Beach, by accident. Her parents were in Florida to by a new car for her grandfather, who was a taxi driver. Ms. Lowe was a surprise, coming three months early and weighing only three pounds, ten ounces. She grew up in Grand Bahama, Treasure Cay, and Green Turtle Cay. She went to school in Grand Bahama, Florida, and Marsh Harbour. She had several childhood
friends who are still good friends, like
Tracey Sawyer. Ms. Dianna has three children:
Quinton, who is 26; Ashton, who is 25; and Hailey, who is 17.
Ms. Dianna has several successful businesses. Most young people on Green Turtle Cay know about her ice cream shop, The Turtle Crawl Café. This was originally her grandmother’s restaurant. Ms. Denise McIntosh worked there when she was young. Ms. Dianna wanted to carry on her grandmother’s traditions and opened the café, originally serving healthy foods as well as ice cream. But soon she realized that people just wanted ice cream. Her favourite flavour is chocolate.

Ms. Dianna also owns and manages apartment and cottage rentals in Freeport and Green Turtle Cay. After Dorian, some people decided sell their properties instead of rebuilding. Dianna and a business partner bought some and fixed them up to rent. Ms. Dianna also rents out storage lockers on Green Turtle Cay. After Dorian, people needed someplace to store things they could save from their damaged homes and new things they got for their homes when they rebuilt. So she and her business partner decided to build the
storage lockers.

When looking to hire someone to work for her, Ms. Dianna looks for honesty, great personality and someone who is reliable. She needs to know that she can count on the person to come to work when they are supposed to. When asked what she likes best about running her businesses, she said, “Meeting new people.” She once met Sandra Bullock, though she didn’t know it was her until about two weeks later. What does she like least about running her businesses? “The long hours.” Anytime of the day or night she might have to help someone who is renting from her. The main thing that Ms. Dianna has learned from being a businesswoman is to never burn bridges. You never know when you might need help from
someone so it is important to be nice to everyone,
not make enemies, and be friendly.
Ms. Dianna shared a difficult and emotional story about surviving Hurricane Dorian, with her mother and daughter. When her house blew away, they grabbed their purses with money and passports and put them in the clothes dryer. Then they crawled on their stomachs to Ms. Marilyn Saunders’ house. They couldn’t see where they were going but she knew the direction. They crawled under the house and sheltered there until the storm was over. Centipedes and spiders crawled all over them while they were there. The dryer survived the storm and their valuables were still there afterwards.

Ms. Dianna is one of the coaches of the new Soccer Saturdays programme. She started playing soccer when she was 6 or 7 years old and she loved it right away. It was one of many extracurricular activities. She also participated in gymnastics and ballet. Her children also played soccer.
She became a soccer coach when Hailey (who was 4 or 5 at the time) played and asked her to be a coach. Hailey is now a cheerleader at her school in Florida. They recently placed third in a competition where there were 25,000 participants.
Ms. Dianna said that playing and coaching soccer teaches players good sportsmanship and the importance of being a good team member.
