Where did you grow up, Officer Wildgoose?
I grew up in Grand Bahama, Bahamas.
Who was your favorite teacher?
My favorite teacher was my 3rd-grade teacher, Mrs. Bowles. She was my favorite because she was nice, kind, and generous.
What is your favorite color?
My favorite colors are red and blue.
Where did you go to school?
I originally wanted to be a kinesiologist to pursue sports therapy. I went to Tabernacle High School in Grand Bahama. From there, I went to the United States and graduated high school at Athens Christian. My college journey started at Lamar State and Cleveland State, and I eventually graduated from King University.
What was your saddest day?
My saddest day was when my mother passed away. I put my career on hold to come home and help care for her.
Why did you become a police officer?
After my mother passed, I found it challenging to return to the U.S. to resume my education. A conversation with my sister led me to apply to be a police officer. I filled out my application, took the entrance exam, and passed my physical. Then, I attended the Police Academy. I graduated on September 5, 2019—just four days after Hurricane Dorian.
What do you do as a police officer?
My job is to “Protect and Serve.” My favorite part of the job is coming to talk to kids about my work, just like I’m doing now with you. I also enjoy mentoring young adults.
How do you remember all the laws?
I started learning at the Police Academy, but I firmly believe that learning never stops. I am constantly studying and improving my knowledge.
Is your job fun?
This job can be fun, but, like life, you have to take the good with the bad. My job is not easy, and it comes with a lot of responsibilities.
What is your favorite music? What is your favorite song?
My favorite music is rap. My favorite song is March Madness by Future.
Do you like basketball? Who are your favorite players?
I love basketball and played the sport in high school and college! My all-time favorite player is Kobe Bryant. My favorite active player is James Harden.
Do you carry a gun?
(At this point, Officer Wildgoose stood up, unhooked, and unloaded his gun, presenting it to the students.)
"This is a 9mm standard pistol that I carry. Guns are extremely dangerous. The only reason I can show you this gun is because I removed the cartridge, making it harmless. Once the weapon is open and cartridge-free, it is safe."
What is your favorite day?
My favorite day is February 20th—my birthday!
May we take a photograph with you?
Absolutely!
